Not Pokemon, not poke, but po-kay! For those who haven't heard of a poke bowl, you'd be excited about its arrival in Perth ready for the summer. And guess what, we bet you would like it just as much as an acai bowl!
Loosely translated from Hawaiian, Poke means 'chunk' in English. That said, it’s a bowl of rice topped with delicious raw cubed fish and fresh greens, drizzled in flavorsome condiments. Healthy, huh? So, let’s say thank you to Hawaii as we all now get a chance to try this beautiful creation.
Duotone, East Perth
When Japan meets Hawaii in Duotone, it's going to be something fabulous. Fresh salmon, seasoned brown rice, green peas, grilled pineapple, avocado, fried shallot, nori chips, pickled ginger and radish, kimchi - it’s just the first place, and we are already salivating guys.
Some Day Coffee Co, Floreat
Not just one, but TWO poke bowls! The first filled with sashimi grade salmon and greens and the second “green bowl” filled with chicken breast and greens on the new summer menu. Apparently the team from Some Day has left you a tough decision to make. If we were you, get both to avoid the dilemma! Healthy, gluten and dairy-free, why not?
Stomp Coffee, North Perth
Huzzah! Stomp coffee is joining the ranks to dish out some poke goodness from CM Poke every weekend. Think - the melt-in-your-mouth raw tuna and salmon, served with red cabbage, cucumber, corns, brown rice and more. Finish off with a flavorful sesame ginger dressing; their poke is pure heaven!
Hoki Poke, Leederville
Aloha to the dedicated poke joint! Using top-notch quality seafood straight from Kailis Bros daily, they are to-die-for! Perfect a lazy Sunday morning in bed.
Pixel Coffee Brewers, Leederville
Yep, the new Scandinavian Poke Bowl at Pixel is an absolute no-brainer. House-cured salmon, roasted and pickled beets, edamame quinoa salad and Sriracha mayo. Admit it, is it still that a boring, healthily dish? No way!
Canteen, Trigg
Situated at the beautiful beachside, the Kailis team behind Canteen has been leading the poke craze since its’ opening. From the tempting Salmon Poke - ponzu, wasabi mayo, furikake seasoning, seaweed salad, brown rice, to the Snapper Poke - soya & sriracha, fried shallots, spring onions, brown rice, you know there's always something you'd be looking forward to. Oh, golly!
Holly Raye's, Bassendean
Proudly present the Teriyaki Chicken poke from Holly Raye's - avocado, pickled ginger, red cabbage, carrot, brown rice, coriander, fresh chopped chilli and a soy ginger dressing. This Asian-influenced poke is unusual, but we’re all too happy to try some new poke inventions!
Bowl'n, CBD
Like the name suggests, Bowl'n has everything in a bowl. Acai bowls, smoothie bowls, salad bowls and of course, poke bowls, any bowl you name it, they have it (too good to be true)! Their traditional poke is our top pick - cubed salmon, sushi rice, classic style dressing, edamame, coriander, spring onions, fried shallots, pickled ginger, kelp noodles, furikake, nori cracker (wow, that’s a lot!). Meanwhile, the Hawaiian poke is another a must-try - tuna, black rice, mango, pineapple, avocado, coco-colada sauce, fried wonton, sauerkraut, pickled watermelon. Yum!
Ipoke Bar, Fremantle
We are jealous of the locals there for having these guys set up shop in the Fremantle Markets. From traditional to vegetarian pokes, they are the perfect choice to keep on track with your health goals. You can also create your own custom poke bowl- sashimi, toppings, the base, and dressing. Hell yes, and this is going to be the best combination you would ever taste!
The Don, Northbridge
Along with the signature ramen burgers and some bao buns, these bad boys are finally back again after the pop-up store. Not sure if you’re aware, but they are also doing well with the Korean-influenced vegetarian poke don - red cabbage, seaweed, sesame, edamame, carrot, cucumber, and mushroom.
Pleased to meet you, Northbridge
Dishing up the American-inspired dishes, fresh tuna poke from Pleased to Meet You is a must have. Served Fresh tuna, seaweed salad, edamame, corns, and red cabbage with the slightly crunchy black rice, this is the treat to your taste bud!
