After their tour de force of 2019, WA’s top young jazz stars are finishing off the decade with a show covering hand-picked highlights of the year in Jazz Under the Stars!
On November 22, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra’s (WAYJO) three big bands will take you on a tour of a range of jazz stylings from New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Detroit, Hollywood and Cuba.
This season’s theme, An American Jazz Story, has included international performances, tours across regional WA, guest stars from the USA, as well as international exchanges with the USA and Japan performing ticketed events for more than 8,000 people.
“2019 has been a landmark season for WAYJO, celebrating the birthplace of the music we love," said WAYJO Artistic Director Dr Mace Francis.
“Each month our band members took audiences on a sonic journey to cities that contributed to musical styles that have not only influenced jazz, but also modern music.”
The WAYJO MinterEllison Monday Night Orchestra along with the Tuesday and Wednesday Night Orchestras will unite to play pieces from performances across the year as well as some new tunes set to excite in 2020.
“This year the Monday Night Orchestra played a bunch of great shows from the New Orleans Concert at the start of the year, featuring New York Trombonist Mariel Bildsten, to playing some down and dirty blues Chicago style,” said Monday Night Orchestra Musical Director Ricki Mallet.
“After a year of sold out performances, an extremely rewarding regional tour mixing with local communities and schools, and rehearsing every week, the band is fired up and ready for this final concert.”
Founded in 1983, WAYJO promotes the State’s young emerging and established jazz talent with more than 100 musicians aged 14 to 25.
So bring a picnic blanket, a glass of wine, family and friends to enjoy tunes in the summer night air from 7:30pm at the Quarry Amphitheatre in City Beach!
