Folk & Merchant a welcome addition to Doubleview

A trendy new addition is opening its doors this Spring, in the humming coastal Doubleview neighbourhood.

Introducing Folk & Merchant, a vibrant café and lifestyle retail space blended into one, oozing with beautiful earthy, coastal style.

Renovations are currently underway to convert the space (that was Mr Herberts) into a lush suburban oasis. An inspiring, welcoming, and tranquil place for kindred ‘folk’ to connect, create and relax.

The dynamic duo behind Folk & Merchant, is wife and husband, Laura and Gary Fletcher. They make a stellar team, bringing an array of skills to the venue. Laura is a highly qualified designer of clothing, lifestyle products and interiors, and Gary has worked in hospitality and business all over the world. Folk and Merchant is a combined vision for them both to pursue their passions and share their loves with the local community.

Tassel umbrellas, cacti and rustic wood furniture will be adorning the exterior of Folk & Merchant. There will be a play area for little ones, along with stylish picnic rugs and low seated furniture for families, friends and loved ones to gather in the sunshine. Inside, the fresh airy space will be styled with natural tones and textures, coastal boho aesthetics, timber furniture, a lush garden wall, Moroccan silk cushions, dried native flowers, rattan lamp shades and hammock hanging chairs. Serious eye candy for design lovers.

Owner and Designer, Laura Fletcher says, “The name Folk & Merchant represents what we’re going to be about. Our community, ‘Folk’, will be the heartbeat of the space. Therefore, every single element we’re selecting, and designing is with locals in the front of our minds. It will be an ever-evolving space and grow with our community.

“We are dedicated and committed to working with small local businesses for every touchpoint, particularly sustainable, Fairtrade and ecofriendly brands and businesses. The café will serve exceptional specialty coffee with our own unique blend, with a goal to hero the coffee and highlight how progressive the Perth coffee scene has become. We will showcase high quality, sustainably sourced beans, roasted by boutique local artisan roasters. With small batch single origin on constant rotation, always giving our community something new to sample. Our long-term goal is to offer a variety of different brewing methods, all paired with wholesome and nutritious food.

“The lifestyle retail space will be stocked with gorgeous homewares, gifts, and lifestyle products from artisan Australian brands, along with my own organic children’s clothing label, Lucie June. Our dream is to build a creative hub offering workshops, yoga classes and buskers will join us on the weekends, playing live acoustic music in the courtyard area.  

“We live locally and love to immerse ourselves in this neighbourhood. It’s our home away from home, being originally from England and South Africa. We are very excited to be bringing our dream to life and opening the doors of Folk & Merchant mid-September. We have two young children as well as two little dogs, so our intention is to create a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere where everyone feels at home, even fur babies. “We look forward to meeting more of our neighbours very soon and providing them with outstanding and genuine customer service,” concluded Mrs Fletcher.

Folk & Merchant will open in two phases. In mid-September 2021, the first phase will open, seeing the café and lifestyle retail space come to life. Phase two will follow in a of months, where the venue will expand to have a patio and relaxed outdoor seating space, along with a kid’s nature play area.
